Candy, the old swamper who shows Geroge and Lennie to their bunks, is missing what limb?

Candy has lost his hand in an accident on the ranch. He explains how he was given a settlement and the job of swamper as compensation. Candy is aware that he will soon become useless and he is keen to join George and Lennie’s dream as an escape-




I wish somebody'd shoot me when I ain't no good,  
but they won't do that. They'll can me, and I ain't gonna
have no place to go.

 

It is interesting to see Candy’s story as a foreshadowing of Curley’s future. Once Curley's hand is destroyed by Lennie, he has lost the power of being the boxer and the ranch bully. He will be left to rely on the goodwill of others too.
