What does ponyboy think of the socs before he talks to cherry and what does cherry say the difference between the socs and the greasers are?

Pony Boy, the younger brother of Darry and Soda Pop, in the book The Outsiders has grown up in a neighborhood of low income homes and a gang called the greasers.  The greasers have had an on going conflict with the Socs.  The Socs are the rival socially acceptable group.  The Socs have cars, play football, and live life well.  Pony Boy thinks that they are very opposite him and his friends.

When Pony Boy meets Cherry, a Soc's girlfriend and one of the Soc crowd, he is exposed to the discovery of what Socs are like.  He has never had the opportunity to know one before.  For the first time he learns that they have problems and conflicts as well.  He also learns that not all of them are mean and look down on him.  In addition, he learns that he can share his feelings with Cherry.  He begins to realize that the Greasers and Socs have some things in common.

"That's why we're separated," I said. "It's not money, its feeling-you don't feel anything and we feel too violently."(38)

"And-she was trying to hide a smile-"that's probably why we takes turns getting our names in the paper."(38)

"Nobody but Soda could really get me talking.  Till I Met Cherry."(39)
