Why does Baba say "it might be unfair, but what happens in a single day can change the course of a whole life"?

The book "The Kite Runner" almost provides ironic examples for the lessons that Baba tries to teach Amir.  Little does Baba know how true his words rang for Amir.

Prior to the events on the day that Amir won the kite contest Amir felt that he could never win his father's approval.  What should have been a glorious day for Amir changed in an afternoon.  Amir witnessed Assef rape Hassan while Assef's friends watched.  Amir, a child himself, froze and did nothing to help him.  The rest of Amir's childhood and Hassan's changed because of that single day.  The scars were also brought into Amir's adulthood and changed Hassan's life as well.

Another set of events that had to do with Baba and his life changing in a single day included the day that was to be wonderful for him.  The day that Amir was born should have been a celebration, but Baba lost his beuatiful wife.

Baba then fell from grace by sleeping with Ali's wife.  Hassan was born.  The moment altered Baba's life and haunted him for the rest of his life.

Amir had a day given to him to redeem himself.  He found himself with a choice to make as to whether or not to try and fight Assef to save Sorab, Hassan's son.  He fights him.  The choice will lead to his personal redemption.
