What is the pharmacological action of liquorice?

Scientific name:Glycyrrhiza echinata (glabra)


Chemical composition: 5-15% rhizome-containing glycosides: glycosides saponins type related to the oleanolic acid.It also contains reducing sugars, hemolytic saponins, asparagine, resin, a substance with estrogen action (hormone estrogen), sugars, mannitol, cellulose, lignin, vitamins of group B.



In the popular tradition:rhizome is drunk against cough and chest pain.



Pharmacological action:antispasmodic, slightly diuretic, easy expectorant by thinning bronchial secretions, antispasmodic, anti histamine, buffer action in gastric acidity, anti-cough action, action on fluid-salt metabolism, anorexic action, action against estrogen, cardiovascular, bacteriostatic, antitoxic against tetanus toxin, anti hemorrhoid, slightly laxative, estrogen, anti-ulcer and anti dysmenorrhea. Reduces gastric inflammation, protective to stomach lining. It is not advisable to be used by those who have hypertension that retains sodium in the body and thus makes blood pressure to increase. Help in reducing joint inflammations.
